Hi folks,

just would like to know what is your opinion/experience concerning Gonatodes male coloration change starting. When you are able to recognize the first color changes of your Gonatodes males, in the third month of their life :roll: ? Thanks for sharing your observation.

Hello Radim,
It depends on the species. The males of Gonatodes ocellatus start to change their coloration after 3 months, but the males of the subspecies of Gonatodes albogularis need some more time. You can first observe a change in the throat-region, it begins to get yellow. After about 4-5 months the head is changing coloration too. But it strongly depends on the terrarium-terms: if you keep them hot with much food they surely grow faster and if you keep more young males together the coloration-change could be suppressed for a while.

Hi Dennis,

thank you very much for sharing your Gonatodes male coloration change observations. Your information that the male throat area usually starts to change the color first is very valuable. I can understand that the certain mentioned breeding conditions can initiate or postpone the start of coloration change of the particular males, too.

My the only one observation of two vittatus males I have from Sacha is that they showed practically complete typical male coloration in their age of 3+ months ;) .

Hi Radim!
My G. vittatus had been older, about 4-5 months, before i could first see the coloration of the male.
